Let’s hope this woman got the appropriate legal representation and that she isn’t a victim of a frame-up.
Irene Canoneo Gomera, a 34-year-old Filipino domestic helper, has been sentenced to two months in jail in Hong Kong after she admitted that she stole several luxury items from her boss, Eleanor Kwok Law Kwai-chun, a co-founder of cosmetic retailer Sa Sa International.
The case was featured in Apple Daily and translated by EJInsight.
Gomera’s loot — which included branded handbags, T-shirts, socks, bras, umbrellas, and phone chargers — was worth HKD$50,000 or about PHP305,382. The items were all taken from her employer’s home on Island Road in Deep Water Bay before the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court.
The report noted: “Her lawyer told the court it was Gomera’s first time to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong, and she couldn’t control her urge to steal because it was the first time she saw so many luxury products in her life.”
It further revealed that “Gomera kept all the stolen items in her room and she did not sell a single item.” Her boss immediately fired her after discovering the thefts.
