An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) based in Slovakia recently died after being beaten up by Slovak nationals who were reportedly harassing two women, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Sunday.

The DFA cited a report from the Philippine embassy in Vienna stating that Henry John Acorda, 36, died on Thursday at the University Hospital Ružinov after he was beaten up along a street in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Acorda was attacked after he allegedly tried to defend two women the two suspected assailants were allegedly harassing in the streets.

According to ABS-CBN News, a 28-year-old Slovakian man has been taken into police custody and charged with manslaughter after being linked to the incident.

Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said in a statement released yesterday that all those responsible for the death of Acorda would be brought to justice.

“We mourn the loss of another of our own who by all accounts is a hero who came to the rescue of the defenseless in a land that is not even his,” he said.

Acorda’s family is currently in Slovakia to claim his remains.

The Philippine Consulate in Bratislava has also discussed Acorda’s case with local lawyers.
