Official fired over prison breaks

The chief of the minimum security compound at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa was fired yesterday after three inmates managed to escape.

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director Jesus Bucayu fired Security Officer 1 Alfredo Devaras Jr., the officer-in-charge of the minimum security compound as well as the prison guards manning the gates of the compound at the time of the incidents.

The BuCor head said the move was a “corrective measure to address escape incidents.”

He has also reorganized the Fugitive Recovery Unit.

Bucayu also suspended the “living out” privilege for inmates in the minimum security compound. The privilege, criticized after former Batangas governor Antonio Leviste used it to slip out of prison in 2011, allows inmates to roam around the NBP compound during the day.

An earlier Philippine Star report revealed that three inmates had escaped from the NBP – Jovani Misa last March 19, Eduardo Brosas last March 22 and Jomari Fortuna last April 16 – all after Bucayu assumed office last month.
