Obsessed ‘lover’ kills, rapes and dismembers scholar from Cavite

Mitzi Joy Balunsay was a promising second year tourism scholar from Cavite State University, until she met Alvin De Los Angeles.

According to the victim’s family, Balunsay went to school last Thu (Jan 5) to enroll for the incoming semester, but come nightfall, they received a message from Balunsay’s phone saying she didn’t finish her enrollment and she’ll be sleeping over at a classmate’s home.

On Sat morning, Jan 7, Balunsay’s dismembered remains were found inside a box left along the road in Barangay (Village) Deocampo in Trece Martires, Cavite.

After the investigation, authorities found 20-year-old De Los Angeles — Balunsay’s theater groupmate — as the suspect. He claims to be the victim’s former lover.

According to authorities, the suspect was obsessed with the victim and tricked her into coming with him to an empty apartment where he committed the crime.

“Dahil relihiyosa yung babae, ang palabas niya ay yung isang kapatid niya ay namatay. So kailangang i-pray over sa bahay niya,” said Supt. Egbert Tibayan, Trece Martires Chief of Police.

(Because the woman is religious, he [De Los Angeles] pretended that one of his siblings passed away, so they need to pray over his sibling in his house.)

De Los Angeles admitted he was the one texting the victim’s relatives on Thu night, and that he already sold the victim’s phone.

He said he borrowed the keys to a friend’s apartment, so he was able to execute his plan. He admitted he strangled and killed Balunsay before raping her.

“Ayaw niya na pong makipagbalikan, so chinop-chop ko po, hindi ko po alam kung saan ko po ilalagay,” De Los Angeles said in an ABS-CBN News report.

(She doesn’t want to get back together with me, so I dismembered her body. I didn’t know where to put it.)

“Sana mapatawad mo ako,” he adds, seemingly addressing the victim.

(I hope you can forgive me.)

“Hindi ko matanggap talaga dahil mahal na mahal ko yung anak ko,” said the victim’s father, Jerry Balunsay.

(I really cannot accept it because I love my daughter very much.)

De Los Angeles will be charged with rape with homicide.
