More students are now availing of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Alternative Delivery Modes (ADM).

Under the ADM is the Home Study Program (HSP), an option given to students who want to finish school but are unable to attend daily classes for various reasons.

Batasan Hills National High School is one of the public schools in the country offering HSP. This year, school administrators see an increasing number of students enrolling under the HSP.

BHNHS-HSP coordinator Ruth Yap said from 700 students, they now have more than 2,000 students under the HSP.

Among the common reasons provided by enrollees were financial difficulties, early pregnancy, and in some cases, bullying.

Yap said they are now receiving increasing complaints of bullying, not just from students in Quezon City, but from other cities as well.

One of their students, an incoming 4th year student, dropped out of school when she was in 2nd year due to bullying. Several of her classmates would make fun of her and hurt her, to the point that she only went to school once a month to escape her bullies.

Aside from bullying, her family also experienced financial difficulties, prompting her to avail of the HSP.

According to Yap, HSP is not so different from regular schooling, and just as effective as attending classes in school.

She added that they already have HSP graduates who became teachers, office workers and professionals.
