Isn’t ceasefire automatic in times like these?
“Sometime around 525am yesterday in Barangay Bolacawe in Matnog, Sorsogon, New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attempted to ambush a military and Red Cross convoy on the way to aid Typhoon Yolanda victims in Samar and Leyte,” reports Florante S. Solmerin in Manila Standard Today.
According to Capt. Marjorie Paimela Paniza, public affairs chief of the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, a firefight ensued. The government forces were able to repel the NPA rebels. Two of the attackers were killed and another one was wounded.
Paniza revealed that troops from the 31st and 22nd Infantry Battalions fought less than 20 rebels. She added that the wounded rebel was brought to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda condemned the attack, saying, “We would like to ask these rebel groups not to disrupt the delivery of aid to the affected people in Eastern Visayas.”
