Nov 23 is first ever National Bicycle Day

Bicycle fans, this is your time to rule the road!

“Quezon City has been chosen to host the halfway stop program in the launching of the first ever National Bicycle Day on Sunday, November 23,” reports Chito A. Chavez in Manila Bulletin.

The report noted: “The activity is geared towards promoting the use of bicycles as a regular means of transportation with San Juan City, Manila, Navotas, Malabon City, Caloocan City, Marikina City, and Pasig City forming the north route of the bike parade along with Quezon City.”

The National Bicycle Organization (NBO) and its partner organizers are urging local government units (LGUS) “to identify and designate carless roads within their respective localities and provide free parking spaces for bicycles in shopping malls, restaurants, hospitals, churches, and office buildings.”

National Bicycle Day will also be simultaneously launched in Iloilo, Vigan (for Northern Luzon), Pampanga (for Central Luzon), and Davao (for Mindanao).

The report further revealed that “a petition urging the declaration of the National Bicycle Month in November and every 4th Sunday of November thereafter as National Bicycle Day has already been submitted to the Office of the President by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Environment Management Bureau and the NBO.”

Halfway points in Metro Manila are QC Memorial Circle Dancing Water Fountain at 8:45am and Aseana Avenue near the Department of Foreign Affairs at 9:30am.
