To abstain from voting is a perfectly legitimate choice — it’s not a wasted vote.
According to political analyst Dennis Coronacion, it is anything but apathetic.
Even the Catholic Church says it is a valid Christian political choice.
“Not voting for a particular position when there is no one fitted for it is also a valid Christian political choice. Voting for the ‘lesser evil’ is still voting for evil,” it said in a pastoral letter.
There is a catch, though.
While vote abstention is a respectable political statement, at the end of the day, it is just that: a statement.
According to Coronacion, it will have no bearing on the final result of the elections — even if majority of voters abstain, it is still the leading minority candidate who will be declared the winner.
