Renato “Nato” Beltran, one of the caretakers of the Marikina Public Cemetery, reveals that a mass grave containing the remains of those who died during the onslaught of Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 has gotten no visitors for the last five years. The spot gets covered up by cadena de amor, which is just as well since the area doesn’t appear to have a marker.
This was revealed in a TV Patrol report by Atom Araullo.
The cemetery administrators have kept records of the unidentified Ondoy victims. They have pictures and detailed descriptions of what each dead person was wearing or any identifying body mark such as moles, scars, or tattoos. The report, however, did not say how many unidentified dead people were buried in the mass grave.
Another caretaker, Raymundo Ayusin, said they are still hopeful that some of the relatives of those in the mass grave would one day come to try and find them.
For now, the still-unidentified remains are tagged with numbers in lieu of names.
