No restraining order on Manila Bay reclamation

The Court of Appeals has junked a petition to stop a P14-billion reclamation project in Manila Bay saying it failed to show proof that it would lead to an environmental catastrophe.

The CA Third Division said petitioner former Las Piñas representative Cynthia Villar did not give “credible, competent, and reliable evidence had been presented to support the allegation that the proposed coastal by project would cause environmental damage of such magnitude as to prejudice the lives, health or properties of the residents of Parañaque and Las Piñas.”

Villar, a senatorial candidate, asked the court in March last year to stop the project saying it would cause flooding in 65 villages along Manila Bay and would destroy bird sanctuaries in the area. She presented a petitioned signed by 315, 849 residents and and the findings of a hydrological services consultant to support her petition, the Philippine Star reports.

The court said Villar’s objections “had been disproven by objective, expert and scientific studies of reputable entities with vast international experience.”
