Perhaps, schools could have been told sooner.
“Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairperson Patricia Licuanan stated on Wednesday, Mar 26, that the agency does not advise changing the start of academic calendar from June to August after thorough consideration of issues on internationalization, climate, and student finances,” reports Ron B. Lopez in the Manila Bulletin.
Licuanan explained further that “the calendar shift is not necessarily needed by higher institutions for integration, as schools should only need to meet the required academic hours for an academic year.”
Moreover, Licuanan pointed out that “families dependent on agricultural income may not have school funds when universities open in August.”
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines-Diliman professors who opposed the calendar shift lamented that Licuanan’s statement came too late.
Hell, yeah.
