This is a wise move, as there are still corrupt cops in our midst.
On Sat night, Oct 29, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde ordered checkpoints in Metro Manila dismantled fter receiving guidelines from the Directorate for Operations of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Apparently, President Rodrigo Duterte himself ordered checkpoints dismantled, saying they are a source of corruption among unscrupulous police officers — not to mention an inconvenience to motorists.
Moreover, there have been complaints about corrupt cops allegedly extorting money from some motorists.
“Albayalde explained that police checkpoints would only be set up during dragnet operations or other ’emergencies’ to catch criminals,” reports Non Alquitran in The Philippine Star.
Albayalde was quoted as saying, “There are no more checkpoint operations in the metropolis and I can attest to the veracity of that.”
Albayalde added that “police officers who continue to conduct checkpoint operations will be dealt with accordingly.” He had earlier said that cops caught conducting unauthorized checkpoint operations would be reassigned to mobile and foot patrol duty.
