Nine out of ten motorcycle riders pronounced dead on arrival were not wearing helmets when they got into an accident according to the Department of Health’s Online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.
The figure was taken from 13,883 injury cases in the last quarter of 2012 alone and with data from 86 government and privately-run hospitals.
Riders and their passengers are legally required to wear motorcycle safety helmets when on their bikes, but not everybody obeys the law.
“In order to reduce or avoid injuries, the DOH recommends the promotion of “safety first” mindset and attitude,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona said. He also said road safety is a personal commitment as well as a shared responsibility with everybody else on the road.
Of the injuries recorded by the DOH, 32.1 percent were from vehicular crashes.
