Water crisis looms over Metro Manila

Metro Manila is among some areas in the Philippines that may experience a water crisis in the next 10 years because of growing demand.

According to an InterAksyon report, Gerard Lopez of the Philippine Waterworks Association said Metro Manila as well as Cebu, Davao, Baguio, and Angeles City risk a water shortage if new sources for potable water are not found.

“There is a [Japan International Cooperation Agency] study that says that in 2025 if we will not conserve water, there may be some problems. But of course we can always start conserving now and look for other sources,” he said in the report.

He also said government funding alone cannot pay for developing new sources of water and for bringing piped water to rural areas. Many areas in the Philippines still rely on hand pumps that extract ground water, the report  said.
