Vice features Philippine politics on its HBO series

The Pinoy Pride jury is still out on this one, but New York City-based media outfit Vice is featuring Philippine politics in the first season of its cable series Vice on HBO.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Vice on HBO will feature “the insanity that is political life in the Philippines” alongside stories on life on the India-Pakistan border, and life in North Korea.

One of the segments, called “Assassination Nation” looks at political assassinations in the Philippines “along the way, illuminating the gun culture of the country and how the only way to get elected is to have a small army — literally — at your disposal.”

The trailer for the show’s first season also shows Vice correspondent Ryan Duffy talking to Abu Misry Mama, spokesman for the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM), a splinter group from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in peace talks with the Philippine government.

This is not the first time that Vice, known for its brand of irreverent and sometimes reckless immersion journalism, has featured the Philippines. In the past, it has done stories on Holy Week crucifixions, prison gangs, and (tangentially) on the dancing inmates of Cebu.
