Days after the death of the 16-year-old UP Manila student, small changes are being made to ease the burden of tuition fees and make the State University truly accessible to the poor.
According to the Inquirer, classes in UP Manila have been suspended on Monday and has been called a “Day of Mourning in remembrance of Kristel Pilar Mariz Tejada, Iskolar ng Bayan”.
Students continue to hold prayer vigils for Tejada, who committed suicide on Friday, after she was forced to take a leave absence from the state University over unpaid tuition fees. Protests on the other hand, are being held against the UP Administration and the UP Socialized Tuition Assistance Program.
For his part, UP President Alfredo Pascual has promised reforms on this policy and called for a news conference on Monday to discuss this.
At the same time, UP Public Affairs Director Alfredo Leachon also revealed that UP alumni have started giving donations to assist students like Tejada who have unpaid fees in the University.
