In the wake of another fraternity brawl between Alpha Phi Beta and Alpha Sigma fraternities of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Dean Michael Tan of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) and CSSP Student Council Chair Carlo Brolagda filed an administrative cases against both fraternities for violating the school’s Revised Rules and Regulations Governing Fraternities, Sororities, and Student Organizations. Violators of these rules face expulsion.
The brawl occurred at the UP Palma Hall in the area where the Alpha Sigma fraternity holds fort. Seven Alpha Phi Beta members supposedly came into the Alpha Sigma “tambayan” to confront some members and a scuffle ensued where both parties obtained injuries.
Aside from the administrative complaint, a letter was also sent to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs requesting the suspension of leaders from both fraternities.
Brolagda explained that they had had enough of fraternity related violence, citing the death of UP student Cris Mendez during a fraternity hazing in 2006. He also said that they are only looking after the safety of the students and that they want fraternities to be accountable for their actions.
University Student Council Chair Heart Diño supported this move and likewise affirmed that they will no longer allow such things to go unpunished, Inquirer News reported.
