Transfer of Mali the elephant okayed by House panel

The House committee on natural resources approved a resolution for the transfer of Mali, the Manila Zoo’s sole elephant.

The Zoo management, however cited old age in their decision not to let the elephant go. Mali will be transferred to an elephant sanctuary in Thailand.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Jana Sevilla had said that their group was willing to shoulder the expenses for the transfer.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, on the other hand, says that even as he respects the House resolution,  under the law, the local government has jurisdiction over animals within its boundaries, GMA News reported.
