The Bible faces stiff competition, goes digital

The Philippine Bible Society (PBS) is acknowledging the fact that the Bible is facing competition not just from romance pocketbooks and book on horoscopes and feng shui, but also from the Internet.

According to PBS Secretary Nora Lucero, a lot of women read romance pocketbooks while a lot of young people spend a lot of time online.

Inquirer reported that to promote and increase Bible literacy in the Philippines, the PBS started a program in 2009 that aims to distribute 5 million Bibles in a span of five years. But so far, only 800,000 Bibles have been given away.

One challenge they are encountering is funding, considering how printing cost for a Bible is P150 although they sell each copy for only P50.

To keep up with the times, the society has produced an audio Bible plus an e-Bible that can be downloaded.
