Telecom companies ordered to refund and cut text messaging charges

Texting enthusiasts will be rejoicing soon as the government has sent a directive to mobile phone companies to reduce their text messaging charges from P1.00 to P0.80 and to refund customers of the P0.20 difference per text beginning from the effectivity of the memorandum until such time that the process has been settled.

This mandate comes one year after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) ordered three major mobile phone companies (Smart, Sun and Globe) to reduce the interconnection charges for texting between different companies from P0.35 to P0.15 per text.

Globe has expressed their grievance over this directive stating that the mobile phone industry is a deregulated industry so they have the right to fix their retail prices at whatever rate they deem acceptable in the market. The Ayala-led company intends to utilize legal means to defend this right.

Smart and Sun, which are both part of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. have decided to reserve their comments until they have reviewed the situation fully, Interaksyon.com reported.
