Taguig City student shoots cousin with a “pen gun”

A 13-year-old female high school student is in the hospital after being accidentally shot by her 14-year-old cousin who was showing her a sumpak, or improvised gun.

The incident happened during recess at General Ricardo Papa High School in Taguig City. According to a DZMM report, the 14-year-old was showing his cousin a pen gun when, thinking it wasn’t loaded, pointed it at her and fired. His cousin was hit in the jaw, the report said.

The girl is now at the Taguig-Pateros District Hospital. The boy, on the other hand, is now with the Taguig City social welfare office.

School principal Gina Poblete said the student told her he brought the pen gun to protect himself against a bully.

The city’s Public Safety Office has begun checking students’ bags and authorities are looking into how the student was able to bring the pen gun into school.
