Sweet-talking scammer owes P400-M to victims

Residents of Fairview, Quezon City approached Senator Aquilino “Kiko” Pimentel Jr. on Monday seeking legal assistance in recovering money they had invested in what has turned out to be a scam.

Janet Flores, who also goes by other names Janet Bernades and Janet Gujilde, is now facing a P400-M estafa case, along with her husband Danilo, after they scammed parents, teachers and government employees who placed faith in them and invested their hard-earned money in a business that turned out to be a con.

Victims of the two reported that Flores presented them with a business as dealer of school supplies to Fairview Elementary School. She also claimed that she was a supplier of materials to a hotel in Cebu. Flores was also able to provide receipts and documentations to a teacher who requested evidence before placing her investment.

Initially, Flores gave out interests on the investments so the victims put more trust in her and invested more money, inviting also other friends and family members to join in. Hayde Estoque, one of the investors, reported that she invested about P3.6 million in Flores’s business. Another victim, Reynante Rullan, increased his investment from $20,000 to $700,000 within three months of his first outlay by taking out loans and encouraging friends and family members to invest as well.

Now, all of Flores’ victims are desperate to re-claim their investments as they are deep in debt and have no means to provide for their families. Sen. Pimentel’s office has assured them that he will provide legal aid to the victims, Interaksyon.com reported.
