Efforts to clean up Rizal Park and make it more attractive to tourists include weeding out all the street vendors and hawkers in the area. On Tuesday, heated arguments between them and Rizal Park authorities erupted when Manila Police tried to evict long time street vendors.
Manila Police District Station 5 Commander Superintendent Ferdinand Quirante said in a Philippine Star report that they exercised maximum tolerance on the vendors. The latter stood their ground and refused to vacate the premises unless they are given an alternative source of livelihood.
The vendors were represented by Danilo Depositar, who called on National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC) director Juliet Villegas to hold a dialogue with them. refused to hold a dialogue with them.
