Soda Slayer: Brave kid fights for Philippines school soft drink ban with YouTube video

A preternaturally politically active 9-year-old has taken to YouTube after an effort he supported last year to regulate soft drink sales in Philippine schools failed.

Daniel “Chip” Gatmaytan convinced Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago to file Senate Bill 3134 – An Act Regulating the Availability of Beverages to Children in Schools – as part of a school project in 2012.

The proposal failed to become law, so yesterday he uploaded an impassioned plea for citizens to lobby politicians against the unhealthy sodas.

“I realized that I am up against big and powerful companies,” says Chip in the video. “I learned that to win the battle against soft drink companies I need the help of many people.”

What an erudite and virtuous young man!

He goes on to ask Philippines citizens to post the Youtube video on politicians’ Facebook walls and ask them if they are willing to take a stand against soft drink companies.

The video closes out with a simple call to action to the viewer: “Are you ready to be a soda slayer?”

You’ve sold us, Chip. We can say without a doubt that we are indeed ready to be soda slayers.
