Police deploy bicycle patrols to keep shoppers and tourists safe

Two police districts in Metro Manila will be deploying bicycle-riding police officers to make the Philippine National Police more visible in commercial areas.

The Quezon City Police District’s bike cops will patrol Araneta Center, a shopping area and transportation hub in Cubao. They will be clad in shorts and will wear armbands that say “Tourist Police”.

“They’re not there for leisure, but are actually rendering double duty as beat patrollers and tourist policemen,” Senior Superintendent Richard Albano said in a Philippine Star report.

The Northern Police District, which covers Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela, has also assigned eight policemen to a bicycle unit that will patrol the areas of Monumento and Rizal Avenue.

“It’s difficult but fun. We can mix work and exercise through biking,” Senior Police Officer 1 John Cabanata, said in the report.
