Victims of human rights abuse during the Martial Law period will finally be compensated after President Benigno Aquino III signs the landmark piece of legislation today.
The Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013 will be signed in line with the 27th anniversary of the EDSA-1 People Power revolution. The measure authorizes the releases of some PHP10 billion from the recovered ill-gotten wealth of Ferdinand Marcos and the Marcos family during their regime.
The new law also spearheads the creation of the Human Rights Violations Victim’s Memorial Commission.
During Martial Law, tens of thousands of Filipinos became victims of abuse and violence, the Journal reported.
