PNoy still opposed to death penalty

The Philippine president is still not too keen on reimposing the death penalty despite all the heinous crimes that have been happening recently, according to ABS-CBN News.

“Well, the position of the President always, when it comes to any form of crime, is [that] the effective deterrent of crime would be the knowledge that there will be certainty of punishment,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte told DZRB yesterday, Jan. 6. “’Yun po ‘yung lagi nating pinupunto na bago po mag-isip [ang isang tao] na gumawa ng krimen, ang maiisip po nila ay ‘hindi ko na gagawin kasi siguradong mahuhuli ako at makukulong ako.’”

So what have they been doing? It can be remembered that Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said last November 2013 that they have been focusing on improving the police system. For example, there is increased visibility on the streets of the metro now. He also proudly added that the number of index crimes has gone down.
