Plans to evict 100,000 informal settlers in the metropolis, criticized

Labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) is criticizing the government’s plan to evict 100,000 urban poor settlers living along Metro Manila’s waterways.

KMU chairman Elmer Labog said the government is just using flood control to sugarcoat the demolition of informal residences set up by squatters living along rivers in the metropolis.

Earlier, Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, announced that informal settlers living along rivers and other waterways will be evicted before the rainy season starts tho June. He said they will be moved to medium rise buildings to ensure their safety. This will also pave the way for improved flood control measures for the entire metropolis.

The KMU on the other hand noted that the Aquino administration has no track record of providing safe and decent housing for the poor, the Business Mirror reported.
