Opening soon in QC: breast milk banks

It’s true what those baby formula TVCs say before ending their ad: breast milk is still best for baby. Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista sure agrees, and this is why he just approved the “Quezon City Human Milk Bank Ordinance.” Introduced by QC Councilor Julienne Alyson Rae Medalla, the ordinance makes possible inside the pediatrics division of city-owned hospitals a human milk bank section that would collect, screen, process, store and distribute donated human milk.

According to the ordinance, the milk banks should be operated in a nonprofit basis, although there may be some processing fee charged for screening the milk and for administrative costs.

Infants from the intensive care unit, pediatric wards, pay wards and emergency rooms will benefit from the donated breast milk, according to Inquirer.
