News Flash: Unruly drivers cause traffic

Here’s something that nobody expected: A party-list lawmaker has pointed out that undisciplined drivers have been causing traffic on Metro Manila’s streets.

According to a press statement from the House of Representatives media bureau, Association of Laborers and Employees party-list Representative Catalina Bagasina has found the cause of Metro Manila’s traffic problems.

She said “traffic jams in Metro Manila are not caused so much by the number of vehicles but by the complete disregard of traffic rules and regulations by some reckless motorists, especially public utility vehicle drivers.”

She said the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s number coding scheme is commendable for trying to reduce the number of vehicles on the road but that it is not enough.

Around 2,000 MMDA traffic constables and 500 police officers with the Traffic Enforcement Group try to manage traffic on Metro Manila’s roads but Bagasina said “with all these undisciplined people on the streets, the perennial traffic problem in the metropolis will never be solved.”

Bagasina also pointed out that all those traffic cops seem to disappear “at night and during inclement weather.”
