Car thieves are becoming more ingenious nowadays.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), carjackers are targeting rent-a-car agencies and casino financiers by pawning stolen vehicles to the latter using fake documents.
MPD Anti Car Theft Section head Senior Inspector Rosalino Ibay revealed these details in a Philippine Star report after recovering a stolen vehicle at a hotel in Ermita, Manila.
The Toyota Grandia belonged to car rental owner Robert Ranchez from San Fernando, La Union. He said the vehicle was rented by one Maryjane Tolentino. When the suspect failed to return it after 14 days, Ranchez decided to report it to the authorities.
Days later, the stolen vehicle was recovered in Manila. It was also discovered that Tolentino is also wanted for car theft in other parts of the country. The police said they are investigating whether casino financiers are indeed accepting stolen vehicles.
