NBI on spying: We’ll be more careful next time

The National Bureau of Investigation has confirmed sending agents to the house of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III in Taguig City.

Sun Star Online reports NBI Deputy Director for Intelligence Services Reynaldo Esmeralda confirmed ordering the operation “to monitor the premises of the Kiram family.”

He said the operation went awry because of a misunderstanding. He said the agents were supposed to ask the help of TV5 reporter Carla Lim to help them gain access to the house. He said Lim even introduced the agents to Kiram’s wife Fatima as members of the NBI.

He said the NBI agents should then have shown their identification cards or business cards.

“Next time, Esmeralda promised that a similar operation will be done discreetly so as not to compromise the identity of agents,” the report said.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines has condemned the act, calling it unethical and “downright criminal”.
