The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will demolish shanties under Cutcut Bridge, a supposed haven for street kids who pester pedestrians and motorists in that part of Pasay City.
The Manila Bulletin reports the demolition of the shanties is set for Tuesday, March 12, and will be done by in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Pasay City police.
MMDA said the so-called “batang hamog” and “gagamba boys” run under the bridge after harassing passersby. “All shanties under the bridge would be demolished because this is where they hang out,” Amante Salvador, head of MMDA’s Street Dweller Care Unit said.
Although some families living under the bridge have agreed to leave after being offered inclusion in a government cash-for-work program, others have refused to leave.
The area will be fenced off to prevent settlers from building shanties there, the MMDA said.
