The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be launching more bike lanes in major roads next week to promote biking as an alternative mode of transportation.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino revealed that the agency has laid out bike lanes from the Remedios Circle in Malate, Manila up to Roxas Boulevard. Another bike lane has been placed on the 550-meter stretch from President Quirino Avenue to the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Bike lanes have also been placed at Marcos Highway and Commonwealth Avenue.
The MMDA chief said the bike lanes will be inaugurated on Nov. 15. He also assured the public that the bike lanes will be manned by traffic enforcers to ensure that bike lanes remain solely for the use of bikers and reduce the number of road accidents.
Tolentino explained that the MMDA is supporting the campaign to promote biking as a sustainable mode of transportation for commuters. By creating more bike lanes and ensuring their safety on the road, he said more bikers will be encouraged to use their bikes to go to work or school.
Biking will also lessen pollution and reduce vehicle traffic in the metropolis, Inquirer.net reported.
