Meralco targets launch of prepaid electricity by mid-2013

First there were prepaid cellphones, phone lines and cable television. Now, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is laying the groundwork to introduce prepaid electricity in Metro Manila by middle of next year.

Alfredo Panlilio, Meralco senior vice president, says the electricity provider is targeting to have their prepaid electricity service fully commercial by May or June 2013.

According to Abs-cbnnews.com, Meralco recently signed an agreement with General Electric for the use of the company’s smart grid roadmap.

Panlilio says the service will be pilot tested in several areas in the metropolis including Angono, Rizal come December. The prepaid service allows consumers to purchase P300 worth of electricity and the corresponding kilowatt-hours will be loaded to their electric meter.

The prepaid electricity service is aimed at helping consumers budget their electricity consumption better. It will hopefully keep more people from getting their electricity service cut due to unpaid bills.
