Even posh hotels in the metropolis are not spared from threats of fire.
On Saturday afternoon, employees and guests at the Manila Peninsula Hotel vacated the premises after a fire of still unknown origin broke at the hotel’s basement area.
According to Makati Fire Chief Ric Perdigon, the fire started at around 1 p.m. and escalated to first alarm status. Fortunately, the hotel’s in-house fire brigade was quick to respond and ordered an evacuation without causing any panic.
The blaze was put out an hour and a half after. Perdigon said the firefighters had difficulty entering the basement area because of the thick smoke. He added that they had to wear breathing apparatus in order to do the job.
Initial investigation revealed that the fire originated at the carpentry and paint section in the basement.
Perdigon added that this is the second fire in Makati City this month, the Philippine Star reported.
