Makati “pabasa” huts test positive for lead

Makati residents are urged to be extra careful when taking part of Holy Week activities, especially the pabasa, which is traditionally done in makeshift huts.

Environmental group Eco Waste Coalition on Saturday conducted a spot test of 17 huts or kubols in Makati City and found that nine of those had amounts of lead that were way above the safe level.  According to an Inquirer News report, one hut tested in Brgy. Poblacion registered lead levels as high as 11,000 parts per million.  The safe level is only 90 parts per million.

The group issued the warning because even children participate in the Holy Week activities, and it would be dangerous for them if they are exposed to lead-based paint.  Eco Waste also advised workers to be extra careful when dismantling the huts.
