Hackers deface Philippine websites over situation in Sabah

Hackers have defaced at least two Philippine websites, seemingly over tension in Sabah between Malaysian security forces and the Royal Army of the Sultanate of Sulu.

Philippine media websites Opinyon.com.ph and TuklasinNatin.com  have been defaced, with hackers demanding that the Philippines “take some action” over the situation or face more cyberattacks.

The Philippine government has been calling on Sultan Jamalul Kiram III to withdraw between 100 to 300 of the sultan’s followers from Sabah, where they have set up camp since February 12. The move was meant to reiterate the sultanate’s claim to Sabah, Kiram said.

President Benigno Aquino III has said the Philippines has not abandoned its claim to Sabah. On Saturday, he said Kiram’s followers chose “the wrong path” of pursuing the claim and urged them to surrender.

A clash between the sultan’s followers and Malaysian authorities on Friday left 12 Filipinos and 2 Malaysians dead, according to reports. A separate clash in Semporna in Sabah left 12 dead, according to an InterAksyon.com report.
