Gordon to crack down on motorcycle-riding thieves

Former senator Richard Gordon has reveled his “battle plan” against motorcycle-riding thieves operating in the metropolis.

Besides hanging oversized license plate numbers at the front and back of motorcycles, Gordon said the Land Transportation Office (LTO) can also require riders to have their license numbers printed in large fonts on the helmets that they are using.

Gordon raised alarm over the fact that 80 percent of street crimes are being committed via motorcycles, adding that there are several other measures that can be done for both the crime-prevention and crime-solution aspects.

Besides the big license plates, Gordon also suggests the following:

1. Color-coding the helmets to correspond with either where the owner is living (e.g., Makati, Manila, or Pasig) or the LTO office where he registered the motorcycle in.

2. Immediate reporting of stolen motorcycles to the nearest LTO office. Gordon says in most cases, stolen motorcycles were used to commit the street crimes.

3. Conducting a massive social and traditional media information drive to encourage public vigilance in reporting suspicious personalities and activities.

Gordon expressed confidence that his measures will be accepted the same way that motorcycle users have agreed to have their helmets certified by the Department of Trade and Industry to meet international safety standards, Interaksyon.com reported.
