‘Gangnam Style’ reduced fireworks injuries in the Philippines

What an achievement! Apart from being the most viewed video of all time on YouTube, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” also got to help lower the incidence of injuries related to firecrackers in the Philippines, according to Interaksyon.

This claim is from Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Enrique Ona, who credited the “Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) Iwas Paputok” campaign of Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag. The campaign suggests dancing to the popular song and using alternative noisemakers instead of lighting up firecrackers to welcome the New Year.

Dr. Tayag himself promoted the campaign by dancing to the song’s popular steps while going around different areas. He even visited one with 2012 Miss Universe First Runner-Up Janine Tugonon (who, of course, had to dance “Gangnam Style” herself).

DOH shows that compared to the same period last year, the total figure of fireworks-related injuries is 17 percent lower.
