Food prices are unaffordable to poor, says Enrile

Cagayan First District Rep. Juan Ponce “Jack” Enrile Jr. noted what a lot of Filipinos have long known, that despite the economic growth that the government has been reporting, the benefits of these have not trickled down to majority of the Filipinos as prices of food and basic necessities continue to be priced at largely unaffordable levels.

Enrile also remarked that inspite of the record 7.1 percent GDP growth, the World Health Organization (WHO) data shows that 16 million Filipinos are not properly nourished while the Social Weather Station reported that 3 out of 10 Filipinos are unemployed.

Enrile stated that the government needs to bridge this gap between the progressive economy and the actual conditions of millions of Filipinos by reviewing its policies and coming up with corrective measures.

As a leading candidate for the senatorial race under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), Enrile has named “food sovereignty” as the priority of his programs when he gets elected, the Journal reported.
