Fire prevention month officially starts tomorrow and the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) is urging citizens to be extra vigilant and check electrical wirings in their homes to prevent fires.
BFP FC/Insp. Renato Marcial, who heads the bureau’s NCR chapter, said faulty electrical wiring accounts for a significant number of fires all over the metropolis every year. In 2012, he said it accounted for 1500 of 2000 fires that broke in Metro Manila.
The BFP official added that electrical wirings are neglected or overlooked in most households, which make it all the more dangerous.
Some indicators to watch out for, he said, are blinking lights even if the light bulbs have just been replaced as well as warm electrical outlets. If these signs are present in your home, Marcial recommends calling an electrician to check on it immediately and prevent possible fires.
Marcial called on citizens, specially informal settlers to be more careful. The BFP official added that their bureau cannot handle all the fires breaking out in the metropolis. The BFP currently needs additional 1600 fire trucks to meet the needs of every city, GMA News reported.
