The Highway Patrol Group has arrested Pasig-City based Maria Ruby Cruz Avila, the leader of a carnap gang in Quezon City.
Supt. James Ramos, acting NCR Highway Patrol regional chief, said several complainants alleged that Avila’s MO involves pretending to have a rent a car business. She will convince new acquaintances to join the business and leave their vehicles with them.
Once the vehicles were in her possession, Avila will then hold the cars for ransom.
Unknown to the suspect, the most recent victims sought the assistance of the Highway Patrol Group which set an entrapment operation. She was arrested by the HPG.
Charges of estafa, grave coercion as well as violation of the Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972 were filed against Avila and her companions, the Journal reported.
