Election gun ban starts Jan. 13

In line with the May 13 elections, the gun ban takes into effect starting Jan. 13. Gun owners’ license to carry firearms outside of their residences will be suspended as part of the election law.

Director Leonardo Espina, Metro Manila police chief, underlined the suspension stating that only on-duty law enforcers who are in uniform are allowed to carry firearms outside their homes. Espina added that “we should always be in uniform while carrying firearms.”

License issuance, application processing and approval, and release of firearms licenses are also suspended during the same period. This was part of the rules for the gun ban as specified in the Comelec Resolution No. 9561-A.

Part of the rules specify that new licenses and firearms will not be released to the owner, but will be kept at the PNP Firearms and Explosive Office and Civil Security Group.

According to the Manila Standard Today, the renewal of licenses, however, will continue as before.
