As of Dec. 24, 44 firecracker-related injuries have been recorded by health officials, according to the Department of Health (DOH) spokesman Eric Tayag. Because of this, they are considering partially – or even totally – banning firecrackers if injuries related to them continue to rise.
According to ABS-CBN, he said that the National Capital Region leads when it come to the number of firecracker injuries, with 14. This includes a man from Compostela Village who picked up a “super lolo” and lost three fingers because of this.
“If we see the same numbers this year, then we might consider recommending a partial ban or total ban – a ban that can be discussed with other stakeholders,” Tayag said.
Even fireworks can pose danger to spectators. For example, there is an 18-year old female who got conjunctivitis after she watched a fireworks display in UST.
Tayag added that firecrackers bans are common, such as in Davao and in residential countires in other countries.
