Depressed Pinoys urged to seek professional help

The recent suicide of a 16-year-old UP Manila student has raised alarm over the increasing number of suicide cases in the metropolis. Experts are now urging individuals who are exhibiting signs and symptoms of depression to seek professional help.

In a GMA News report, Dr. Paul V. Lee, head of the psychiatry section of Manila Doctors Hospital and associate professor of UP Manila, said the suicide of freshman Kristel Tejada was not solely caused by the school’s decision to have her file a leave of absence over unpaid tuition fees.  The expert said the event could have been the trigger, or the last straw that pushed her over the edge. However, for a person to commit suicide, he said there must be a  “confluence of factors”.

The doctor added that depression is one of the most common triggers of suicide.  Lee noted that the longer depression goes untreated, it is more likely that a person will resort to taking his or her own life.

Lee advised people who are feeling depressed to seek professional help as well as the support of family and friends.
