Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje is calling on residents of Metro Manila to participate in the government’s campaign to reduce air pollution in the metropolis to make it more healthy and a viable tourist destination.
Paje requests the public to be more active in joining the “car-free” day campaign. He also identified other ways for the public to reduce air emission such as using alternative means of transportation, using more energy efficient products and conserving electricity.
Currently, Metro Manila does not meet World Health Organization standards of acceptable air quality. Based on existing data, Metro Manila’s total suspended particulates (TSP) level is at 106ug/Ncm (micrograms per normal cubic meter), while the acceptable level is at 90ug/Ncm. This, however, has shown a significant decline of 36 percent, according to Paje, ABS CBN News reported.
