Cynthia Villar apologizes for jab at Pinoy nurses

After receiving flak from different social media sites for her “uninformed” comments about Filipino registered nurses, Las Pinas representative Cynthia Villar, who is running for a Senate post this May, issued an apology to all Filipino nurses working here and abroad.

According to reports, the association of Filipino nurses in the United Kingdom, students, teachers and other Nursing organizations were irked by Villar’s comments that Filipinos do not have to work too hard since they only aspire to become “room nurses” or caregivers.

Rep. Villar tweeted her apology to all Filipino RNs, students, teachers and their families and noted that it was not her intention to hurt anyone.

“I’m aware of the sacrifices made by nurses, nursing students and their families to support their education and their profession. I’m also aware of the substantial contributions to the country of the thousands of nurses working abroad,” Villar said in Filipino.

Filipino nurses consider Villar’s statement as a grave insult to their profession. According to data, there are about 2 million Registered Nurses in the Philippines.
