Customs to implement amnesty program for private vehicle importers

The Bureau of Customs announced that it will be implementing an amnesty program for vehicle importers who failed to pay duties. Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon said that the program hopes to raise half a billion pesos.

“We were not able to implement it last year. Hopefully, we can do it this year,” said Biazon in a Manila Standard Today report.

The Voluntary Disclosure Program was first introduced in 2007, and in 2010 then Commissioner Angelito Alvarez expanded this to include all importations.

According to Biazon, the amnesty program will not include car dealers and manufacturers, but only private vehicle owners with erroneous entries on import documents submitted to the bureau.
