Lawmakers are pushing that minor offenders be penalized with community service instead imprisonment.
According to the Philippine Star, the measure will help decongest the country’s already cramped penal facilities.
The bill was introduced by Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara, and was sponsored and defended in plenary by the Committee on Revision of Laws chaired by Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas.
Instead of serving time for offenses that are punishable by one to 30 days imprisonment, offenders may be ordered to render community service. This will be done under the probation of a barangay official and a probation officer, the Philippine Star reported.
